Earthpark Sustainability Goals

• 80% purchased renewable energy
• 20% onsite/district generation
• Recycle 100% facility wastes
• USGBC LEED rating
• No ozone-depleting chemicals
• Carbon-neutral footprint

Finding the balance between the intrinsic human desire to improve our quality of life and humanity’s need to protect Earth’s natural resources is the true challenge of our time. Sustainability is the essential process through which this balance can be achieved.

The essence of sustainability is learning to provide food, fuel, shelter and recreation for our current generation while ensuring that future generations will have the resources to be able to sustain the same, or better, quality of life for themselves. Sustainable processes, by definition, can be maintained indefinitely without seriously depleting a resource or degrading the environment.

Sustainability is the responsibility of every person on Earth. It is simply a matter of choice. We are all stewards of the natural resources of our planet.

  • One person can begin to recycle.
  • One person can plant a tree.
  • One person can change their home’s filament light bulbs to energy efficient ones.
  • One person can begin using environmentally safe cleaning products in their home.
  • One person can talk to their friends about the steps they are taking, inspiring them to take their own…

As board member Philippe Cousteau recently stated on a visit to Iowa, “One person truly can make a difference”.

As an immersive learning environment, Earthpark™ will serve as a national resource for education and technology, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy, to help each individual realize the potential of positive action towards a cleaner Earth. Kids, have some fun exploring in Dr. E’s Energy Lab!

Green technology is a global growth movement impacting industry, education, government and personal life. Some of the world’s best minds are studying how to tap the energy wealth of our planet through such renewable sources as geothermal storage, hydrogen power, biomass fuels, solar energy and wind power. Some “traditional” methods of energy production, such as hydroelectric generators, are also being made cleaner and more efficient.

Earthpark™ will serve as a research facility for alternative energy sources, a model for green building design and construction and as a meeting place for national and international forums on sustainability. Earthpark™ will become a center for facilitating ideas and practices that will enable future generations to continue to provide for themselves. Green technologies used in Earthpark’s™ construction will serve as teaching tools, so anyone can learn how these are engineered to practically impact our world.
